Many abilities of the light side and dark side ultimately reached the same destination by different paths. There was no fundamental difference between them, only differences in how they were used.

Take Force choke, for example. The light side could also use it. What defined it was the user. If one acted with anger and controlled it through the dark side of the Force, then it belonged to the dark side. If one calmly and consciously employed it, then it belonged to the light side.
