Back when the restaurant had first settled into a steady rhythm, Lucy tasted a kind of peace she’d never really had.

She’d sleep until her body said “enough,” eat a proper breakfast Allen cooked with his own hands, jack into the Net to study the newest tricks, then—carefully, just to test the waters—poke at Biotechnica’s data fortress. After lunch she’d watch an old movie or read something from before the Fourth Corporate War… then finish the day with half an hour on the treadmill.

When she had free time, she’d trade a few words with Sasha or Kiwi, or go out shopping with them.
