Dogtown’s night was once again illuminated by neon lights. As residents poured into the streets to enjoy the nightlife, Karl waited at Garnet Tower for two friends who had gone to the Mexican border as his representatives.

“Thanks for taking the trouble this time, Jack, Oliver,” Karl said. “Jack, since you said you’d spent time down there before, that’s why I sent you. I heard the talks went pretty well—good work.”

“What trouble?” Jack grinned, his gaze drifting curiously past Karl’s shoulder. “Where’s Johnny? And I don’t see T-BUG or V either.”
