The rumbling grew closer. Closer. As if the thing behind it had locked onto Karl’s position and was now practically breathing down his neck.

Karl’s eyes snapped toward the trembling pile of loose rubble in front of him— it was shaking with an unnatural rhythm, the vibrations deepening with every passing second.

Pebbles skittered down from the top of the heap. A heavy, rhythmic digging noise echoed through the cramped space. He could clearly hear the scrape of rough scales against stone, and beneath it, a deep low-frequency resonance— like the throaty hum of some massive creature’s chest cavity— vibrating the gravel beneath his boots.
