“Hey, Karl — still working overtime?” V’s voice crackled through the phone, a faint static distortion riding on the line. In the background, Karl could just make out the sizzle of a frying pan.

“Oliver’s actually cooking tonight — rare occasion,” V went on. “He’s working on that special Angus steak he’s been saving. Says he’ll show you the authentic American pan-sear method. Asparagus and truffle mashed potatoes on the side. What time are you coming back? If you’re really stuck, we’ll pack it up and bring it over. Oh, by the way — Hanako and her people are all under control now, so things should be easier on your end, right?”

Karl held the phone between his shoulder and ear, eyes flicking across the stream of data on his monitor. He rubbed the stiffness from his neck, his voice carrying a quiet weariness. “Gotta wait a bit longer. The guy taking over — that Akechi fellow — he’s on his way. Once we finish the handoff, I can head home. Speaking of last night, how’d things go with Hansen after I slipped out of the banquet?”
